Reading matters
On this day in 1904, the Irish writer James Joyce had his first romantic liason with Nora Barnacle. Subsequently, Joyce chose that 16 June in Dublin as the day for the setting of his novel Ulysses.
The novel concludes with the stream of consciousness of Bloom's wife, Molly:

Double Fifth (Dragon Boat) festival
Today is in the Chinese calendar the fifth day of the fifth lunar month: Tuen Ng.
According to popular legend, that was when 2,000 years ago a Chinese national hero, Qu Yuan, drowned himself in a river to protest against corrupt rulers.
Legend also says people threw dumplings into the water to keep the fish from eating Qu Yuan's body. Which is why it is customary to eat steamed sticky rice and a sweet or savoury filling, the tout all neatly wrapped up in banana leaf.
Hereabouts, the Double Fifth is also public holiday. Since this year the festival falls on a Sunday, the holiday is on Monday.

Shelter from the storm
Well, it tipped it down for 24 hours. More than 200mm overnight and then a further 70mm (in just one hour on Saturday morning). Prior to this morning's deluge, Hong Kong Observatory issued a 'black' rainstorm warning and advised people to "take shelter in a safe place and stay there".
The overall result? Locals found themselves knee-deep in water in Sheung Wan, Western and Wanchai on Hong Kong island. There were floods in the New Territories; landslides here and there; and delays at Hong Kong International Airport.
Meanwhile, Mister Bijou got off lightly, but was obliged to delay shopping for fruit and veg.
Fortunately, there are no known fatalities.
Sunday UPDATE: Regrettably, two people were wiped out by a landside on Castle Peak Road, Tuen Mun.
Elsewhere, land access to Tai O, Lantau island, is still blocked as a result yesterday's major deluge. The village is also currently without landline telephone links and fresh water.
