Well, that's that, then.
Typhoon Hagupit, the tally so far: eight dead in the Philippines; locally, sixty injured, three seriously; flights cancelled or delayed; almost everything closed; fallen scaffolding, flooding in the usual places; 100,000 evacuated along the South China coast; Vietnam next.
A little known fact -- outside of the Philippines -- hagupit is Tagalog for "to lash".

(click on photo to enlarge)Hong Kong Observatory raised the Number 8 at 6pm. At that hour Typhoon Hagupit was about 210 kilometres south-southeast of a little island in the South China Sea.
The "big wind" is forecast to move west or west-northwest and make landfall on the south China coast.
That's to say, well to the west of a little island in the South China Sea.
Hagupit's outer rainbands and strong winds are already upon the island. Gale force winds and heavy rains to come.
